QPHIG Presentation: Building Healthy Policy on Campus,

Tuesday October 30th at 5pm

New Medical Building Rm 021

Megan Laan, KFL&A Public Health and Cheng Zhou, Engaging Emerging Leaders in Cancer Control

This session will cover the beginnings of KFL&A Public Health’s work on preventing skin cancer with the campus. Megan will cover background information on the topic as well as review some of the actions that have been taken to date to influence policy development on campus. She will review the role of local public health units in health promotion and the findings of several nursing student projects over the past year. Cheng will review the Engaging Emerging Leaders in Cancer Control program and its 5 target areas: healthy eating, physical activity, UVR exposure, tobacco/alcohol/drug use and the HPV vaccine. He will then lead an interactive discussion about what kinds of health issues are important to Queen’s students and what students are seeing and experiencing on campus in relation to these 5 areas? After that, he will review the findings of his research about healthy policy on campus and discuss his recommendations for further action.
